These are our Apple Toppers!
You will need:
- Felt (green + red + brown)
- A pencil (to see what they look like)
- Needle + thread
- Cardboard
- Scissors
Instructions:
1. I did not get exact measurements for cutting the felt. I just grabbed a piece of cardboard and traced an apple around the tip of the pencil eraser to get an idea of how big the topper needed to be.
2. Cut out your apple from the cardboard, and clip the edges until you are satisfied with your apple shape. Do this twice, so that you have two apple pieces.
3. Overlay the red felt over the cardboard apple and carefully cut out your red felt apple, moving the scissors along the edge of the cardboard to get the exact shape you want.
4. Take your green and brown felt and clip a leaf and stem. You don't really need cardboard trace-outs to do this, but you can if you want. If not, just eyeball it.
5. Prepare your needle and thread and hand stitch the stem onto one apple piece. Do this again with the leaf. The leaf and stem may overlap, and that's Ok.
6. Hand stitch the two apple pieces together. Make sure you leave an opening at the bottom and top, so your pencil can slide in. Make the two openings bigger than you think they should be, because you definitely want to make sure your pencil can fit inside.
7. Slide your pencil inside the apple, and viola! A pencil Apple Topper.
You can come up with your own creations - penguins, anchors, cereal pieces - if you think of it, you can probably turn it into a pencil topper! These are fairly easy to make, and I had a lot of fun doing them.
